Conscious Development and Empowerment Trust (CODET) Statement on the shrinking Civic Space

Human Rights are a universally accepted and enshrined code of ethics for the survival of humans. In Zimbabwe, Chapter 4 of the Constitution in its entirety clearly spells out the fundamental Human Rights of the Zimbabwean people. Guided by The Constitution and its subsidiary law, the citizens of this country and all arms of Government are mandated to abide by the law as there are no sacred cows in front of the law. However recent events in the country whose motive is highly unacceptable have led the citizenry to question the sincerity of the prestigious Zimbabwean security forces in upholding and adhering to Chapter 4 of the Zimbabwean Constitution.

It is from this background that we as Conscious Development and Empowerment Trust (CODET), a community based organization that is working directly with the citizens in issues to do with Human Rights, democracy and governance, stand firm in calling for all institutions of Government and the Zimbabwean people to respect, uphold and adhere to the fundamental Human Rights as enshrined in our Constitution. Our Vision is to see self conscious women, youth and children who fully participate in development and governance. However, this can not be realized with the continued abductions in our societies.

The recent abductions of Robert Saunyama and Councillor Danny Saunyama who were abducted at their family home in Zimunya on the 19th of February 2019 around 9:30pm  is one of many abduction cases in Manicaland. The continued crack down on ordinary citizens is unacceptable in our communities no matter the offence. Human rights violations affect the socio- economic development of the country as a whole and at grass root level the implications are heavily felt by the minority groups such as women, youth and children at most.

As such, for the development of any nation there must be fundamental adherence to the Constitution which is the supreme law of the country. CODET seeks to empower women, youth and children through active participation in development and human rights issues, hence such treatment of citizens which includes beatings, abductions, unwarranted arrests and intimidation continues to hinder this mission, and will see less participation by the minority groups going forward.

#The abductions should stop.
#The unwarranted arrests should stop
#The crackdown on civilians should stop
